The MIC is working to improve the pedestrian environment in the Duluth-Superior metropolitan area through the following planning efforts:
| Safe Routes to School (SRTS)
| The MIC has been a leader in SRTS planning efforts, by involving a broad range of stakeholders to develop Safe Routes to School plans for both Duluth and Superior, and by producing successful applications for SRTS funds to implement the plan recommendations...more |
| Sidewalk Inventories (Duluth and Superior)
| Comprehensive inventories of sidewalk infrastructure were developed for the cities of Superior, WI and Duluth, MN. This information, along with recommendations identifying sidewalk system gaps and key sidewalk preservation areas were integrated into a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database. This GIS data was in turn given to the cities as a tool for identifying priority areas for improvements and to serve as baseline data to be updated as the improvements are implemented and new infrastructure is constructed. |

| Priority Pathways in Duluth
| In March 2005, a short-term planning process to identify priority pedestrian pathways was undertaken at the request of the City of Duluth Human Rights department. The concept, as devised by the Human Rights and Public Works departments, was described as follows: “As part of an overall and systematic approach to creating a more universally accessible city, a system of priority pedestrian pathways throughout the city would be established. Such a system could be identified by signage, maps, or other appropriate methods for use of residents and visitors alike. These pathways would have the highest priority for maintenance, snow removal, and upgrading to achieve full accessibility.” A Steering Committee (City of Duluth Departments, Duluth Transit Authority, MIC, staff) was formed criteria to identify priority sidewalk areas connected by pathways, which were determined primarily as sidewalks along DTA routes. The group identified weighting factors for pedestrian criteria and MIC staff adjusted the GIS model accordingly. |
